I think we can all agree that it is in our interest to be as prepared as we possibly can for the future. The future looks to be full of challenges that will have technical solutions. I am stepping forward to ask for a chance to use what I have learned over my career to help meet those challenges. It is my goal to elaborate on my plans and give you a glimpse at a future where we, as a community, can rise to meet those challenges.
I was born and raised in the Seattle area and graduated from Federal Way High School.
My major interest as a young man was the Boy Scouts, and I enjoyed camping and hiking all over the Pacific Northwest. I reached the rank of Eagle Scout.
Right after high school I joined the US Navy. I served as an Electronics Technician/ Reactor Operator on board the USS Jack (SSN-605), Fast Attack Submarine. Honorably Discharged. I then attended Bellevue college, engineering program.
I have lived in Snohomish County since 1996 when I married my wife, Anne, and started a family in a Gold Bar starter home. My! What a commute! 7 years later we moved to our present home in Snohomish.
As I worked at my career (see Technical Background), I found time to help in the community, coaching kids’ sports. There seemed to be a constant shortage of coaches in the recreational leagues, so that’s where I spent time in both Soccer and Baseball (boys and girls) for many years, and it was the most rewarding time of my life!
Right now, I find myself a house dad, supporting Anne’s teaching career (she teaches in the Monroe School district) and a couple of highschoolers (my 4th and 5th).
And I have time on my hands…
I joined the navy to get the technical training. I choose the most technical rating they had- Electronics Technician / Reactor Operator. I qualified ET/RO and served on the USS Jack, SSN 605.
To qualify to operate a 100megawatt S3G pressurized coolant nuclear reactor, one must demonstrate thorough knowledge of physics, chemistry, material science, thermodynamics, electrical power generation and control, and reactor engineering.
In the 80’s I started an engineering tech job at a Redmond electronics company and was a member of the distressed contracts group (we called it the Tiger Team). We took on failed programs the military needed: in this case, small power supplies that mounted on the gun mounts on fighters. Our designs met the Air Force’s needs and were a success. I prototyped, designed, and tested the product line.
The 90’s found me in the medical ultrasound field. The job included product packaging, manufacturing, ISO 9000, and ultrasound transducer R&D. I designed the BVI 3000 (https://www.somatechnology.com/Ultrasounds/Bladder-Scanners/Verathon-BladderScan-BVI-3000.aspx), a device that could read the volume of a human bladder. It is used to save kidney function during surgery and recovery.
At the turn of the century I returned to aerospace engineering, culminating in the design of several laser systems for Lockheed Martin. This included a 30 kilowatt electric laser. 30kW is the optical output, and it required 100kW total electrical input. The name of the system is ALADIN (https://www.lockheedmartin.com/en-us/capabilities/directed-energy/laser-weapon-systems.html).
So, why my emphases on technology? That’s where the solutions will be found to the challenges we as a community, face: rising cost of power, power system reliability, and community growth.
And of all the choices that voters will make in the coming election, the selection of the District 3 Commissioner for Snohomish PUD is the one where you can make a real difference.
Check back soon, and I'll have this posted for you.
If we join together and make our voices heard, we can fight for the change we want to see!
